Extracurricular Activity Absences

The District shall make no distinction between absences for UIL activities and absences for other extracurricular activities approved by the Board. A student shall be allowed in a school year a maximum of ten extracurricular absences not related to post-district competition, a maximum of five absences for post-district competition prior to state, and a maximum of two absences for state competition.

Eligibility and Participation

Students shall be encouraged to participate in extracurricular and other school-related activities such as school-sponsored clubs, organizations, and activities that represent their particular interests.

The written procedures for all eligibility requirements governing participation in student activities shall be readily available to students.



Curricular activities are those activities that occur within the regular school day and constitute delivery of instruction.


Cocurricular activities are an extension of classroom instruction in which participation is by the entire class or a significant portion thereof. Although carried out in locations outside the regular classroom, cocurricular activities relate directly to and enhance student learning and proficiency.

Students suspended from extracurricular activities because of academic ineligibility shall not be prevented from participating in after-school cocurricular activities. Students who, as a result of attending a cocurricular activity, miss a class other than the sponsoring class or course shall be considered to be on an extracurricular absence in the non-sponsoring class.

Building administrators shall encourage student participation in cocurricular programs.

Exempt Courses: No Pass, No Play

The District shall exempt identified honors courses for the no pass, no play academic requirements; however, for eligibility purposes, the weighted points shall be applied for each grade reporting period (i.e., third- and six-weeks interim progress reports and grade report/report cards every nine weeks (see EIA).

The District has identified the following honors courses for the no pass, no play academic requirements:

Exempt Extracurricular Activity: No Pass, No Play

A student who is ineligible to participate in an extracurricular activity, but who is enrolled in a state-approved music course that participates in UIL Concert and Sightreading Evaluation, may perform with the ensemble during the UIL evaluation performance.

Use of District Facilities

School-sponsored student groups may use District facilities with prior approval of the appropriate administrator. Other student groups may use District facilities in accordance with policy FNAB.
